From the beginning this painting proved to be extremely challenging, and it was quite a journey to complete it. I knew that I wanted to paint a wolf, but before I could lay it out properly I needed some kind of theme to capture. It wasn't until I finally completed the final blocking in stages several months later that I clearly figured out what the painting was meant to show.
The posture and the intense gaze of the wolf is meant to be slightly intimidating and a kind of challenge, not directed at the viewer as an opponent, but as an encouragement to reflect on yourself. The forest around and behind him, meanwhile, are softer and warmer in tone and therefore offer a contrasting mood to balance the painting.
